Who We Are
Inspire: A Choir for Unity is a New York City-based chamber choir dedicated to cultivating compassion and action for diverse social issues through the power of song. In partnership with organizations seeking positive social change, we encourage individual and collective action on socially pressing issues. Since our founding in 2017 by Justin Jalea and Megan Chartrand, we have sought to inspire a spirit of unity among our artists, audiences, and wider community. Hear Your Song is honored to partner with Inspire: A Choir for Unity in celebration of the extraordinary voices of youth songwriters living with serious illnesses and complex health needs. Our youth songwriters ages 6-18 collaborate with our staff and volunteer session leaders through a "kid-driven" process. The songwriters decide what they want to write about, how they want their song to sound, and which roles they want to play in bringing the song to life: some kids just write their own lyrics and others compose their own melodies, record their own vocals, and even produce their own tracks. For youth who often don't have a lot of autonomy in managing their health care journeys in their day-to-day lives, Hear Your Song offers power and choice in the creative process every step of the way. And all of Hear Your Song's programs are completely free of charge for the youth, families, and partner organizations we serve.
Since 2020, Hear Your Song has supported youth songwriters in writing and producing over 500 songs. Tonight, you'll hear songs and songwriters from our partnerships with Montefiore Einstein's Arts and Integrative Medicine (AIM) and the Yes Empowerment Series, The ELM Project's Camp AmeriKids, Double H Ranch Camp, and our pilot project with NYU-Steinhardt's Nest Support Program.
